According to my records the Burgess Gun Co of Buffalo, New York was established by Andrew Burgess in 1892. They mfg'd slide acton shotguns and rifles operated by a unique pistol grip prior to their being purchased by the Winchester Repeating Arms co in 1899. Guns gased on Burgess, patents were mfg'd by a variety of American gunmakers. Serial numbers for all Burgess shotguns begin @ 1000.

Are you sure the 12.5" shell isn't a typo?

A common shell length in those days was 2.5", along with 2 9/16".
