View Full Version : Rem 700 w/Sako extractor issue

I have a Rem 700 with Sako extractor in .260 Remington. Extraction works fine with fired cases; but cartridges inserted and then unloaded without firing do not extract. I have tried to measure the distance between bolt face and extractor hook (rim) and get about .05 -- about the same as the rim thickness of the .260 brass. (I don't have a great way to measure this precisely.)

My guess is that firing pushes the case back firmly enough to engage the hook of the extractor into the case's extractor groove. However, just closing the bolt on the cartridge does not allow the extractor hook to fall into the groove for some reason. (This is a very very clean chamber and bolt.)

What would you recommend to fix this?

Sounds like you reload. Do not push the shoulder back.

I do reload, but even factory 260 cartridges do not extract.

You may also have a headspace issue, or the extractor may be really tight. It is difficult to diagnose over the web.

Could the bullet be engaging the rifling?

I wonder if the spring is too stiff and the claw is not snapping over the rim but on the rim itself?
