View Full Version : Flip over scope for SR556 + EOTech XPS2-0

My AR rifle is a Ruger SR556E with EOTech XPS2-0. Shoots like a dream, but I would like to mount a flip-over scope in back the EOTech. EOTech makes one, and I suppose I will buy one very shortly. Before I plunk down $450+, are there any alternatives that I should consider that anyone wants to suggest?

Here is my configuration: (Yes, I know I'll have to move the XPS2-0 forward to make room for the scope.)

Vortex and a few other manufactures make a magnifier (Midwest Industries sells the flip to side mount with vortex magnifier for $250 I believe).

I would look into something like the Vortex Viper PST 1-4 scope with illuminated reticle and have the best of both worlds for less money after selling your EOtech.

Two options I recommend:

1) If you're looking to use the magnifier to do the job of a scope, sell the EOTech and look around for a good variable power scope. There's tons out there, and of course the good people of this forum will be more than happy to offer assistance if needed. :D

A magnified red-dot isn't a scope. It comes close, but a 3 MOA red dot doesn't quite match up with a well-defined reticle.

2) If you are using the EOTech as your primary sight and want the magnifier for the occasional semi-long-ish distance shot, get the EOTech magnifier. There are other less expensive options out there, but the EOTech magnifier is designed to work perfectly with...wait for it...EOTech sights. I love mine, the glass is surprisingly good, and the mount is sturdy but flipping back and forth isn't a chore. Other manufacturers may or may not have their sights designed to work with EOTech or anyone else, so there could be significant differences in height between the EOTech and other manufacturers' magnifiers. I imagine it would be unpleasant to pay $X00 and find out that the magnifier doesn't align right with your sight.

i had a $100 chinese knockoff of this one on my ar for awhile. it was identical to the eotech, so i gave it a try. it wasn't very sturdy. in fact, i let a friend borrow it, and the mount broke on him. i assume the real one is better, but i'm not shelling out that kind of cash for a magnifier. plus, it adds a lot of weight.

here is the one i had

Thanks for the info, guys. I've decided to wait for the 3rd gen EOTech which will be available in July. (Amazon already has it on their site.)

Thank you all for your excellent thoughts and insights.

Larue no longer sells them; but for awhile they were importing surplus Hensoldt magnifiers from anti-tank weapons and putting them in a Larue mount for AR use. If you can find them on the secondary market, they represent a great value.
