I have a 590 and H&R Pardner Pump - both are bet your life reliable. The Pardner is an 870 clone and the best value but is made in China. If you are on a budget and don't mind the China thing then there is no better value than the Pardner. The 500 is the best deal on a made in the USA shotgun. You can't go wrong here.

WRONG!!! Some components are made in mexico but the guns are made in TEXAS...
Just think how many illegal fence hoppers are staying home to work in the mexican factory...
MOSSBERG INC. has no guns made in mexico as it is against MEXICO'S FEDERAL LAWS!!! NO GUNS ARE MADE IN MEXICO!!!

As to which I would choose... I would take a nearly wore out shot out M-500/590 or Mav88 over any CHINESE import of suspect manufacturing quality...

^^^THIS^^^
Mexico really doesn't have to make guns.
Under the U.S.'s current administration, our Federal Gubment has give them all the guns they need.
Sorry guys/gals, just couldn't resist.

Mossberg. I owned the pardner got it cheap and gave cheap results. Before one round was tested I found the ejector out of spec and had to return to manufacturer. This tools weeks and lots of Phone calls. Quality costs. Lesson learned

OK then I'll just go with a mossberg 500...
@ hogdogs- according to the ATF the receiver is the firearm so they could make everything but the receivers in mexico. (this may not be true)

No... the gun assembly cannot take place in messycoe...
Mossberg, as far as I last knew, made the barrels and receivers in their north east plant at least... then all parts were gathered in Tejas and assembled in the USA...
I know the finish on my 500's and 88's metal always looked too nice to come from mexico...

With the H&R clone of a Remington 870, if I correctly recall H&R wants the gun shipped to it to fit a barrel if you want to be able to change barrels. some say that is due to limited barrel supply. I suspect it has something to do with poor quality control. With a Remington or a Mossberg or any other pump I beleive you just buy a barrel.

Both are good shotguns. I've had many Mossbergs/Mavericks and bought my brother one of the H&R Pardner Pumps. All have been reliable and all are good values, IMO. Both makes have foreign parts, but what doesn't these days?
By law, no guns are made in Mexico outside of military arsenals. Many parts of both Mossbergs and Mavericks are made in Mexico of steel shipped in from the U.S. These finished parts are then shipped back to Eagle Pass, Texas where they are assembled into firearms subject to Mossberg supervison and QC. The H&R pump guns are, of course, built in China. You can safely assume Marlin/H&R has a solid QC program in place as well.

@ smitherians, most Mossberg 500-series parts are compatible with Maverick 88s; the stocks are interchangeable as well, meaning you could always put a set on at a later date. Regardless of where the 88 is made, it is a great value and should not be overlooked
Be advised that if you get a high-capacity 7+1 version Mossberg 500-590 or Maverick, you are limited to the types of barrels available. The standard magazine versions have a much wider selection of barrel types.

I'd get the H&R. It's solid and well made.
