View Full Version : Dovetail sight help?!

Ok, so I've got a Henry Goldenboy .22 that I bought from a guy a couple years ago, he had it drilled and tapped and stuck a Bushnell scope on it. I didn't like the look of it, it ruins the classic look of the gun, so I ordered a new buckhorn rear sight from Henry and then I tried to remove the dovetail plug that had been put in but I can't get it out! I was really smacking hard on the thing too. It looks like it's kinda either been forced or sealed so that it won't come out, but I really would like to figure it out without taking it to a gunsmith, we don't really have any around where I live. Any advice or help? I've never done anything with dovetail sights before so I'm really a beginner. Thanks.

I would suggest contacting Henry and see what they have to say and confirm, the direction you should drive the dovetail out. On some, it matters. ..;)

For some reason, the Henry sights I've had to drive out (to the right as the sights are looked at for shooting) were absolutely the HARDEST to move of any I've done since 1965.

I would say that Henry uses a jam fit, to say the least.

1) SUPPORT the barrel solidly - as in a padded vise, and not with hands on a table.

2) Use a HEAVY hammer to thwack the drift pin; weight = energy.

3) Use a solid pin as a drift - I use the brass pin from the hinge of an old interior door.

4) HIT IT HARD - Don't send a baby to do a man's job.
