November 8, 2011, 12:35 PM
I gave my son a Winchester Model 70.......post 64........probably about a 1975 model in .243 WIN.
Will this mount fit? (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/482285/leupold-1-piece-standard-long-range-scope-base-winchester-70-long-action-matte)
Or maybe this is better (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/103959/leupold-1-piece-standard-scope-base-winchester-70-long-action-matte)

No. You need a short action base.

That's kind of my question. Is there a "short" action post 64 Mod70 action?

I think I'll just have him drive it down to Kesselring's Gun Store.

I once had a '65 or '66 Model 70 in .264 Win Mag. I installed Weaver bases and rings as I usually do, with a 3x9. Worked fine. Nice tack-driver...

Not sure about the 1975 rifles. At one point all 70's were long action. Not sure when they started making short actions. I'd make sure before ordering.
FWIW I truly despise any of the mounts that are windage adjustable and would never think of using one unless my scope mounting holes on the rifle were drilled off center so badly I couldn't mount a scope without using them. That is what they are made for. If your mounting holes are drilled correctly there are a number of much better mounts.

Winchester did not introduce short action Model 70s until around 1983 IIRC. So a 1975 Model 70 would be a long action. Measure the hole spacing at look at the specs for the base.

I use Weaver two piece mounts for my target Model 70s. I've had them on my 300 Win. Post 64 Model 70 1000 yard rifle for over 30 years and it hasn't failed me yet.

I would also go with the weaver two piece bases. They don't cover any part of the ejection port.
EDIT: A long action M70 measures almost exactly 3 and 1/8 inches across the ejection port. Short action is roughly 3/8 inches shorter.
