View Full Version : Stoeger Cougar 8000

Went down to my favorite LGS this morning and found this little beauty. Caught my eye right off the bat. Used, but like new, still in case with extra mag. As soon as I held it, I knew that I had to have it. Just one of those guns that feels like it was made for my hands. Put $50 down to have them hold it till Friday. Getting a bonus check from work and decided that I would just treat myself.

I have heard some great things about these pistols. If it shoots as good as it feels I am gonna be one happy camper. Oh, by the way, got it for $350.00 out the door. Seemed like a resonable price.

Cougars, RIA 1911, EAA Witness, and Ruger P95s are the guns that you get the most bang for your buck in the gun market today. I've shot the Cougar many times; it's a great firearm.

Glad to hear from someone who has experience with one. Not to many times that I have picked up a gun that just felt so right. The one I'm getting is the 9mm.

Big time Congrats MM, you're going to like it. I love my Cougar! (I have the 9mm from Stoeger also) It kicks a little harder than the 92 (but has a fun kind of kick to it) and the grip feels better than the 92. So far mine has run at 100%, typical Beretta for reliability and accuracy. The Cougar is currently my go to gun, I trust it to protect my family.

Here's mine with some Beretta grips. I keep it positioned in the house for defensive purposes.

Those wood grips look sweet. Probably be the next thing I buy.

Horrible gun, can't imagine buying one...

So I bought two!

Anyone have a good source for wood grips? Not much on Ebay and Midway is out of stock on everything.

Hakan Pek used to be a good guy for grips but I don't know if he's still doing them. I have bought grips on ebay... if you'll keep looking you'll probably find some soon. You may have better luck naming the corresponding Beretta model than naming the Stoeger Cougar.

Let us know how the gun does for you.

I have one in 9mm ($350 new at Cabelas) and it is a very well built pistol and Like Meanmachine said, it just fits my hands great. Originally it was a Beretta Cougar and they didn't meet their expectations sales wise so they dropped it from their line. They brought it back when they shipped the original tooling to Turkey and re-branded it with the Stoeger name and are now able to sell it for half the original price.
It functions flawlessly even though it seems to shoot low for me. I probably need to practice more!

I've had good luck with these folks...

Believe it or not Optics Planet had a good selection, but they never could get around to shipping them. - So avoid them (for these grips).

Thanks jglsprings for the link. Just what I was looking for.

I've got the Stoeger Cougar 8000 and the 8045. Excellent guns and without a doubt IMHO the best buy for the money going today! I feel certain you'll love it.

Here is a link for more Cougar grips. I like these because of the Cougar picture engraved in the grips. Smooth or checkered for the same price!

BTW, a local gun shop here in Ohio are selling NIB Stoeger Cougar 8000's for $329. It is where I purchased mine last year for the same price. It is a great gun and I love the rotating barrel design. One of the most comfortable handguns I have ever laid my mitts upon.

Yea, I hear you on that one. There's a second one in my future too. Maybe the .45 with the rail on it. I hear it's a blast to shoot!

Bought one (9mm) a while back for UNDER $400... Great gun, flawless shoot and one of the BEST values out there.
You're gonna really enjoy it!

Supposed to pick it up Friday but if I can get off work a little early, might get it Thurs afternoon. Will try to post picture when I get it home. Appreciate the replies and grip help from everyone.

I've shot a .40 Cougar; to this day, I'm not sure why I didn't buy it at the time.

I have PX4's, which are very similar to the Cougar, and which I like quite a lot.

As far as grips and Hakan Pek go, I bought some grips from him in early 2009. He'd been out of business for a while, prior to that, due to a back injury. But as far as I know, he is still up and running. He lives in Norway, so you'll correspond via email, most likely, but he is good at keeping you updated, he seems to be a very nice guy, and he makes really nice grips.

I have one in 45acp and one in 357sig :D

September 15, 2011, 07:55 PM
Well there has been a slight change of plans.Went in to pick it up today and they had a LNIB 8000 in .40 cal. I thought what the hell, since I already have a couple of Nines, I would go with the .40 cal instead. Same deal as the 9mm. This will be my first experience with a .40

September 16, 2011, 11:16 AM
Iv hade my 8040 for several years and like it a lot. Shoots good and easy to clean and very little recoil and the wife also shoots and likes it. Good luck with yours.

Seemed good enough for the Impossible Mission Force. Ethan Hunt carried one all through the first movie (1996).

Great gun. Screaming price. They were twice as much when they were made by Beretta. Since Stoeger took over, there has been no drop in quality, only a huge drop in price. Nice grab.

Cool on picking up the 8040. Anxious to hear how you like it. I already have the Cougar in the 9mm and I love it. I have all 9mm right now, trying to decide what I should get a .45 in. If I get a .40 some day, it will most likely be in the Cougar or a 96A1. Looking forward to hear what you think of it.
Nice Cougar shots LT3, very cool to see this lesser known gun in that movie! :D

Wow, very nice. I saw some guy comment once that the Cougar is an ugly gun. I didn't get it. I think they look awesome. Very Nice gun, congrats on bringing it home!
