My father has one of these and I'd appreciate help in tracking down the approximate year of production. The serial number is 150XXX.

Hi, Jim,

Could you provide a little more info, like all the markings, patent dates, and whether it is a swing-out cylinder or a solid frame.

Jim:

As best I can with my bi-focals:

Patent date 9/19/1871
Patent 9/5/1874
Patent 1/19/1875

Solid frame - it is the "lightning" (or "Thunderer" in the .41 Colt), not the DA Army of similar configuration but larger size.

As best I can figure from various sources the production date was 1876/77 through 1909/10.

I'd appreciate any approximation on Mfg. Date, or a direction to a good source for the mfg. date.

Thanks for any guidance.

From the serial number, your father's revolver was made in 1904.

I can tell you one thing. The .41 is really inaccurate with .38 specials.

My cousin and I as dumb teenagers found a .41 in the attic at the ranch and bought some .38's for our new gun. Couldn't hit a thing. The oversize chambers were probably the best thing for us to let the pressure out.

Ten foot groups were standard.
