Had a friend give me a Savage 99E lever action rifle in .308 in very nice condition except that somebody had decided to make it a project gun and I did not get the stock bolt, pistol grip cap or screw or the butt pad. All the rest are easy to fix but the stock bolt which holds the stock on the rifle is a major problem. Finding a replacement has been an exercise in frustration so I am thinking of a more permanent solution, that is welding a bolt into the back of the lever frame into the hole where the stock bolt is normally screwed into the frame and threading the bolt at the other end and holding it in place with a nut and washer down inside the stock and covering that with the butt pad. Any thoughts on this?

Go to a major industrial supply house such as Grainger, McMaster Carr, online (google them) & find their threaded rod made with high quality steel, or buy drill rod and cut threads in it. make it the proper length and just loctite or weld a nut / screwhead etc on the end

A machine shop will make you a bolt. I am sure someone on here can give you the measurements.
