View Full Version : Browning Gold ???

I have the opportunity to purchase a Browning Gold Deer Hunter for about $550.
Gun was purchased new a few years ago, sighted in, and then never taken to the field or fired again.
22 rifled barrel with cantelever scope mount.
Leupold Rifleman 2x7 shotgun scope.
Walnut stock.
All literally in new condition.
I think this is an EXCEPTIONAL deal but......

I will need to turn it into a field gun for my son.
I would like to put a 26" field barrel on it for ducks, clays, etc.
I will have to sell slug barrel and scope, then purchase the field barrel.
Will this gun make a good duck/clays gun by swapping barrels?
Anything else about this model that might be a deal killer for what we intend to do (being the Deer Hunter version I am concerned)?
How hard will it be to sell the slug barrel and get a 26" barrel?
Is this as good a deal as i think it is?

Thanks for the help,

Greetings Walleye65, and welcome aboard.

I just checked the ballelexchange.com. Of 104 listings for Browning 12-ga barrels, there was only one specifically for a Gold model. What does that tell you?
Trading the whole gun might be easier.

Thanks Zippy,
I'm pretty sure I can purchase a new barrel if it comes down to that ( it will be salty though). The gun is basically new so i don't mind putting a new barrel on it.
I hope to be able to sell the slug barrel and scope and easily have enough for a new barrel?
That would give me a new Gold set up like I need for around $500.
I just hope there is nothing different about the action or anything related to the Deer Hunter version that will make it a poor duck/clays gun.

Tells me you didn't look too hard. ;)

Degoff's down the road from me has some on gunsamerica, but I believe they are blue.

Browning has them. :)

I don't know if you'll find much demand for that used barrel or not .../and I really have no idea what its worth...

but you are going to find that new replacement barrels are at least $ 300 ...

The Gold model has not been available in a 12ga for at least 2 yrs now ( its still available in a 10ga ) and it was replaced by the Silver series. I would expect the replacement barrels to fit fine ...but you need to be cautious on obsoleted models/order it from a good retailer that will be able to return it - if it doesn't fit.

There are some used barrels out there / used guns for sale ...and it might just be cheaper to leave this one as is / buy another Gold model for a field gun..

Don't really know about the barrel issue. I would look at this gun as a free scope or a possible money-making deal. I'd try to get it for 450-500. I would buy it to resell. I would remove the scope and put the gun on consignment at the local gun store with a starting price of, maybe, $600.00. I'd probably sell the scope here on the forum or keep it. Then go get a Beretta 390 series at Wal-Mart. Better gun and cheaper.
