why are semi auto .22 rifles cheaper than bolt or even single shot rifles?

Seems to me most semi-autos require far less machining and finishing, thus reduce labor and capital investment. Semi-autos are also generally more popular than bolts, making economies of scale greater for the semi-autos.

Short answer - because it costs less to produce semi-auto's than bolt actions.

Have you checked the price of a Browning Semi-Auto .22 even at Grade I? When you hold one, most will not complain about the cost.
