View Full Version : SAA front sight

The front sight of my Colt SAA (38 special) came off while shooting. Luckily it
flew off and ended up in the bullet bucket with my 9mm brass (very lucky).
So my questions are:

How was it affixed to begin with? Was it soldered?

It fits back in perfectly so, is this something I might try or does it need to go
to a smith. If you were going to try it what would you use? JB weld, epoxy?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Typically the sights are silver soldered in place. You didn't say what type of finish your SSA has but, sliver soldering it back on will damage the finish.

A little bit of Brownell's Acra-Glass (2 part gunsmith epoxy) will hold it in place.

Mostly the front sight is not soldered in, it is just swaged in with a press fit, and I doubt you will find any solder in that hole. Just tapping it back in with a brass hammer might be all that is needed or you can use a small chisel-like tool to peen the barrel metal over after it is in. I don't suggest trying to silver solder it in because without special care you will damage the bluing and could do serious harm to the barrel, inside and out.

I suggest that you try just tapping it back in. If it falls out again, call Colt and make arrangements for them to do a permanent fix.
