I have one of those guns that is used for squirrel hunting. Mine is a little beat up. Not sure how many were made.
Found this on the internet:

According to Matt Eastman's book "Browning Sporting Arms of Distinction" total production of the .22 auto take-down was about 427,000 of which about 6% were chambered in .22 short.

Maybe not. I googled up several of those guns and the cheapest one was about $700.00

The Browning Automatic 22 rifles in 22 Short are very rare. Collectors like rare. Collectors have money. If you like money more than rare 22 rifles, you can have it. If you like rare rifles more than money, you can keep it (and make the collectors cry). But $1700 does not sound out of line for an uncommon rifle made 80 years ago in excellent condition.
