Here's the serial number for this gun: 6142197. It's a 22-250.
Can anyone tell me anything about it by this number? I've done some searching of my own and found nothing. I'm not proficient at running serial numbers and knowing where to go to find information, so I was hoping someone could help me. Or maybe point me in the right direction anyway.....

the 788 22-250 in 24 in. barrel was made between 1967- 1979 i believe {not positive } 22in barrel between 1980-83 again not positive. I do not know when exacly yours was made but i do know they are exelent rifles and if you have one and it shoots good , hold on to it they are all getting hard to find. They made the 788's in .222rem,.223, .22-250, 6mmrem.,243, 7mm-08, 30-30,.308, and 44 mag. 181/2 in carbine in .243win., .308win. and 7mm-08.all hard to find. 44 mag VERY hard to find. I own the 250 and i love it and they shoot great. I hope some of this helps though i didnt give you an exact date for your gun, and i hope my info is correct if its not someone please correct me.:)

The year it was manufactured is one thing I'd really like to find out, but I really appreciate the info you've given so far.
It's not my gun, it's a friends gun and I am considering buying it. He got it at an estate auction and has no idea where it originally came from.
I thought the serial number would yield the year of the gun. Is there some number somewhere on this thing that will give me that?
On a scale of 1-10 this gun is a 7 or an 8. It's got some normal wear marks on it. It's got a junk Kassnar 4X scope on it that isn't worth anything. He says the gun shoots great, I have not shot it yet. He wants $350 for it.
