saw an ad where they were on the side kind of at a 45 degree angle and an eotec on top rail. Whats the point of this setup? Seems impractical, especially with BUIS options.

It is a gamer's choice in Tactical class in USPSA 3 gun shooting. The irons are for the really close targets, like 25 yards or less, you just sort of roll the gun over on its side and fire. Open you can have more than one optic, just not in Tactical.

Most folks in multigun open division will do exactly the opposite. A higher powered optic on top, and a 45° offset mount for an eotech or some other red dot setup. The benefit is with the offset mount, you can get that eotech down low to the barrel for less parallax error for up close work, and then you have the scope zeroed to 300 yards for the longer distance shots.

I wouldn't think Iron Sights offset would be of any significant benefit over co-witnessed iron sights through an eotech.
