View Full Version : 5.45x39 AR-15 Anyone got one?

Well, I did several searches and wasn't able to come up with much. I know that the ammo has become much cheaper lately so I figured there would be a few more people able to weigh in on this. I hear a little bit that the round can get stuck in the chamber? I don't know, but I am pretty much going to get one as I got 5000 rounds and a Tantal and the Tantal keyholes, so I sent it back. I will not play the game with century about the keyhole issue again. I love the AR platform, so I'll just get an upper. Help me out, anyone have one? What kind of groups do you get at 100yds? Tell me all about it... :D

I have one I bought from Palmetto State Armory that is made by model 1 sales. I have been happy with it so far it shoots fine and I am not really into to measuring groups with it but I shoots as accurate as I expected and I am satified with it's performance.

Hi catfish, I just posted most of this on another forum, so for those of you who read it over there, please ignore the rest.

To start with, I really like the bulgy surplus ammo. Great stuff, highly accurate, dependable, sure fire. The only thing I don't care for is the air-pocket in the tip of the bullet. Its made to tumble when it hits flesh and the design cuts down on the penetration of the steel plates I shoot.

To tell the truth, as far as accuracy, it shoots about the same as 5.56 from the ARs. The S&W 16" upper is chrome plated in the bbl, chamber, ect. The Model 1 Sales 20" upper is NOT chrome plated. If you clean for corrosive after each use, it really don't matter much, both should run fine.

Over 4,000 rds thru my 3 rifles and have never had a case stick in the chamber. The 20" with a 32 power scope shoots 1 to 2 MOA off a rest.

Try one, bet you'll like it! Happy Holidays, Ken

I just got an S&W upper. Have not shot it, yet. Very good fit with Spike's Tactical lower. Some scratches on the deflector. Check out area51tactical.com or aimsurplus.com.

I've got a S&W M&P15R chambered in 5.45x39. Many, many rounds through it without a single issue - mostly milsurp and some Silver Bear. The 53 gr and 60 gr stuff both work just fine and neither shows any sign of keyholing.

A buddy of mine has a M&P and he absolutely loves it. It runs great with the S&W 5.45 magazines.

Hi again Cat, the post by mnw42 reminded me about the mags. S&W says in some of the adds that you can use regular 5.56 mags with their 5.45x39 upper. I've never had any luck trying that.

Mine do run 100% with the CProducts 5.45x39 30rd mags. CProducts makes the mags for S&W that they include with their rifles and uppers. FYI - If you need any extra mags, AIM has them now for $13.95 ea. :)

Looking forward to your update! Ken
