My front sight on the Cimarron Thunderer (.44-40) is about a half inch in height, causing me to shoot low. What sort of file could I use to file this puppy down??

Very fine and take just a few strokes then shoot it. Doesn't take much to ruin a front sight.

Raise the front sight in the rear and shoot it, once you get it on target file it down close to where you were holding it. Make sure before you file you're using the load you're going to keep.

whats the current range and load your shooting? simplest option is just to merely increase the range you shoot at.

You want to be sure to use a mill-cut bastard file. It will leave a nice and clean surface, unlike a double cut file.

Sgt,
No disrespect intended but you might want to test the pistol from rest to be sure it is the tall front sight causing low shots and not poor trigger control by shooter. It is obviously much easier to shorten a front sight than to restore the original height. I would want to be very sure of the problem cause before filing the front sight.

Uberti's come with tall sights so you can file them down. Originals shoot too high as they were factory sighted for longer distances than normally shot today.
