It sounds like Yugoslavian, but the usual marking on them is "PREDUZECE 44" (Factory 44) in Kragujevac. That factory is also known as Zastava, and has made many Mauser rifles, including the Remington 798. Can you provide pictures or a description of any other markings?

The rollmark is in Cyrillic letters, which is why you are having trouble reading it. It says Zavod 44. Zavod 44 means Factory #44. Preduzece 44 means Enterprise #44. They are one and the same, the military arms factory at Zastava.
