I've had alot of trouble getting any cleaning rods with patches to enter from the muzzle end.I did purchase a cable pull through style cleaning kit. This is the only rifle I have with a muzzle brake on it and I'm curious if anybody else has this problem.I did notice their is a muzzle guide for the M1A's.Is this tool necessary for cleaning the M1 from the muzzle end?

I use the standard, cone shaped cleaning rod guide and a slotted jag. Patches stay on my one piece cleaning rod.

You can buy the M1a muzzle guide, I have at least one, they all work. However the dewey cone guide fits everything and that stays on the cleaning rod.

I can't find the M1/M1a device I use. I have a plastic tray that fits right into the magazine well and holds the bolt back as I clean. That is very useful.

I stuff the slotted jag w/ patch into the chamber, then thread it onto the rod and pull. Ditto on the muzzle guide. If you drill a 12ga shell, it should fit over the suppressor nicely.

I do use the rod guide which fits inside the flash hider to protect the crown.

So I cleaned it again today to try a different approach.I use a jag this time instead of the slotted tip.It worked better but I realized my problem was just too much patch.I would still like to get the guide and the M1A cleaning kit though. Thanks for the info guys.

I use a pull through on mine too. Works fine, but I made the mistake of getting overzealous with the patch size once. Had to hold the rifle upside down, whilst standing on the end of the cable that was hanging out of the muzzle, and pull the rifle upwards to get the cable and patch out. Even then, I didn't know if it was going to come out or not! :o Live and learn.

Take a plastic high brass 12 gauge shell, fired of course...cut the crimped part of the shell off and drill out the primer with a 30 cal or slightly larger drill bit. You now have a M-14/M-1A bore guide about as cheap as they come.
