View Full Version : Mossberg 500 new way to break?

I'm new here, and I took the time to read through any posts that involved Mossberg pumps, and problems, and while there's quite a few that I haven't come across, I might have found a new way to break one.

What I have is actually a Western Field M550, which every source I've found says is a Mossberg 500.

I bought it used, did a mild cleaning on it(pulled the barrel, cleaned the chamber without a full strip-down), put a dozen rounds through it, recleaned, oiled, and put away.

After doing a full stripdown on my father's Mossberg 590(got it used, it just needed a good cleaning), I decided to break out mine and give it the same treatment(since I had just learned how to do the full stripdown, from doing it to my dad's 590)

Disassembly went ok, until it came time to pull the slide/action bars out of the chamber, at which point it got jammed.(Trigger group, round catcher, bolt, bolt slide, and both the interrupter and stop are already out)

I put some oil in there, and attempted to work it loose, instead it worked tight(cleaned it, with both cleaner and oil), now it's binding hard when you work the action(pump).

I attempted to remove the mag-tube, in order to give myself more room to work. No luck, instead it stripped out my buttstock/grip at the bolt, so that it now freespins.

Any ideas?

First from the bottom...
I am guessing you tried to secure the stock to unscrew the mag tube?
If so you likely destroyed the stock and possibly the receiver... Stock is easy to find for a 500. If you stripped the aluminum receiver tan it is a donor gun unless you helicoil it or something.
You secure the receiver, not the stock. If it don't un screw easy than there are remedies for that. Are you trying to remove the action bars with the trigger group out? That is how I do it... You use this video?

More detailed specifics and questions along with pics if possible will help us help you.

Some older Mossbergs have a spring on the mag tube which prevents the pump from sliding off the tube...the tube must be unscrewed and removed to take off the pump.

yeah, I attempted to secure the stock between my feet and torque the mag tube loose. I don't think I broke the receiver, it looks like the wood in the stock near the lug gave out.

I'll get some photos up this afternoon.

btw, when we were dissassembling it, there was alot of dried brown gunk in there, on everything. Is that like old grease or something?(Never seen this before, granted I'm newer to firearms than most here, probably)

And yes, I used that video.

I believe that the brownish goop you saw, is Mossberg's factory assembly grease.

That grease even looks old, brown, & rusty colored, in a NIB Mossy shotty.

It could be tons of WD-40 or oils added by a redneck like me "ever so often" rather than doing a proper field strip and clean...
havlin sales can sell you a low price wood stock (or plastic) if it is indeed a 500.

I wonder if the Western Field M550s were laid up in Cosmoline back at the factory.
