View Full Version : Front sight slot

So, I have started on that list of stuff I was going to do when I retired. I am down to the "Restore the Cadet Martini" line. It is really quite a nice rifle. Rechambered to 32-20 but other than that pretty original.

The problem is the front sight. It came out with very little persuasion (brass drift & soft faced mallet from the left side of the rifle). And it goes in with little more than finger pressure to the mid point.

I need to tighten it up and I am looking for suggestions. I suppose I could put it in with a piece of .002 shim stock underneath. Or I could tap the front and back edges of the dovetail down. Or I could us some threadlock underneath. But I really don't want to risk losing the sight.

Any suggestions???

I use a centerpunch, to raise a few divots in the floor of the dovetail slot.

Shimming is a non permanent fix. In other words, if you decide you don't like it or it doesn't work, you can try something else. If you start pounding on the dovetail or raising divots, you had better hope you like the results or they work, they're harder to remove.
