this is a link to Old Painless and a great 101 level introduction to fighting scatterguns, seems heavily influenced by Clint Smith but that's not a bad thing.

For those of you who don't know, Old Painless is the guy who does the Box-of-truth and Scattergun Bob Tips his hat to him:)

Thanks for the link. GREAT article. It sure does away with all of the Rambo fantasies that a lot of people have. Good, sound info is what enables you to survive an encounter.

Hi,

I just want to point out that this is the tip of the iceberg concerning training on a fighting shotgun. There is much to learn , much to experiment with, and MUCH to disprove.

It is the beginning of GET SMART= know exactly what this weapon WILL and WILL NOT do. Know exactly how to make it GO when it STOPS. Know the fundamental tactics to defeat your enemy.

I my humble opinion there is a HUGE difference between hunting humans and hunting critters or the field sports. That is what this thread is all about.

Good Luck and Be Safe

Great article - it should be mandatory for all of the mall ninjas on the forums, let alone the newbies

Scattergun Bob

Thanks. Do you have anymore links to more advanced lessons? Or reading materials or videos that you would recommend? TOO much of what I see around me and on the different forums is from Rambo wannabes that don't have a clue to real life. That can get you hurt or killed real quick.

I'm already looking at the Box of Truth site.

:Additional Information is what it is all about, yes!

My short list of things to read;

Basic fundamentals of fighting scatterguns

The Defensive Shotgun - Louis Awerbuck

Stress Fire II - Massad F. Ayoob

Shotguns - DVD - Clint Smith

Any or all of these will do

The Mental arts of defense and protection

Principles of Personal Defense - Jeff Cooper

More Tactical Reality - Louis Awerbuck

The Tactical Edge - Charles Remsberg

Understanding our weapon

Complete guide to combat shotguns - Bruce Canfield - NOTE, I am partial to this one because yours truly is in it!

Streetsweepers - Duncan Long

These are some places to start, frankly I am not much of a DVD guy, I know many of these references are on DVD I have no idea where you would look.

Finally, we have a great resource right here in our forum, that's our moderator Dave McC, and I bow to his knowledge and understanding of the subject. Very little that he says do I question.

I spent several years using the fighting shotgun in combat and a longer time as a armorer keeping them running. If I can help I will, if I don't know I will try to send you in the right direction.

Good Luck & Be Safe

Outstanding detailed list.

Now I have 6 or 7 more good books I can buy. Thanks.

Bob:
I'm more of a book guy too ( I get it better, page by page ..)
DVD's do work well on target shotgunning - swing fundamentals, hold points, etc - DVD's like Todd Bender's Fundamentals of Skeet / Bobby Fowler Jr's DVD on sporting clays techniques - with the new "eye cam" on the barrel, you can actually see and feel the concept of hold point, leads, follow thru, etc. But I know that's not your primary interest Bob.

Thanks, ScattergunBob, for the great links and references. A lot of profound info for the newbies and this ol' Skeeter.

BigJimP:
I'm still using Fred Missildine's Score Better at Skeet. ;)

Bill Clede's book, "Police Shotgun Manual," Stakepole Books, 1986. I believe it has been referred to as "The Shotgun according to Smith & Wesson" (Ayoob)

Jeff Cooper's "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" has the genesis of the Gunsite Shotgun Training and

Gabriel Suarez's book "The Tactical Shotgun" takes it a little further.
