I'm picking up a very nice S&W 686-5 tomorrow. 4" barrel stainless .357 with Hogue grips, Wolff mainspring, and 3 speedloaders for $300. Didn't have any questions, I just wanted to gloat :D

Nice revolver, and a steal of a price. I use a 686-5 for IDPA SSR in 2-3 club matches per month.

Be advised, that was the revision (-5) at which they transitioned to the frame-mounted firing pin. If it also has a Wolff mainspring in it, test it thoroughly for reliability. I put a "full power" Wolff mainspring in my 686-5 (two of them, actually) and had light strikes on everything but Federal primers (strain screw tightened all the way down).

Some of the earlier frame mounted firing pin revolvers (of which your 686-5 is one) might be too short or too blunt to reliably work with the Wolff springs. You can try your luck with the C&S unit, or try a new factory unit if you have problems.

There's some discussion on firing pins here:

Personally, I went back to the OEM mainspring and it's now 100% reliable. YMMV.

pwrtool,
Thanks for the info and I'll follow up on that. Likewise, I'm going to use mine for IDPA SSR.

Oh a price gloat thread? You guys don't wanna go there.

Next, it will be the old guys bragging about how they bought new Pythons for less than $200.

Then, the guys who bought them once-fired for $100.

Then, the guys who inherited guns.

I just picked up this Bersa for $150 about a month ago, which wasn't too shabby.

Great deal on that 686! I use Wolf mainsprings in all of my S&W revolvers. Have never had a problem with light strikes, even with the frame mounted firing pins. The only problem I have with the Wolf mainspring is that the rib on the spring prevents the strain screw from tightening evenly. The strain screw can be rounded to fit into the grove of the spring.

Correction: It's a 686-4 with the hammer mounted firing pin. Pretty snazzy :D

Well, I did buy a SAI NM with all GI parts for $485.00 but it was a looooong time ago. Still have it, still shoot it and not one malfunction. Ever.

I got my SW40VE for 99 bucks brand new! That's about all it's worth, but I have fun with it.

Hey, anytime you can get a functional gun for less than $100, it's a good day.
