What's the best way to finish a 1911 stainless slide. I don't want the polished look but something like a machined finish, if that makes sense. I have made several machining cuts and lighten the slide. What would sandblasting do to the surface? Any suggestions?

Try some searches here on the FL. There are companies that specialize in gun finishing, and several have been mentioned in the past.

Playboy Penguin did a whole write up on how to refinish a stainless slide a while back.
It involved a straight edge a flat table, wet/dry sandpaper and gun oil
I still have not worked up the nerve to try it

Thanks, I finally found it, I may try that on the flat areas.

That's called a "brushed" finish.
