How far do I need to strip the gun to get the forend off? The manual doesnt show much in regards to that?

Take the barrel off and then remove the nut that holds the forend in place. If you look at it head on (like you were looking down the barrel that you just took off) you'll see a round nut with slots cut on opposite sides. You'll need a spanner wrench to take that off, or you can make your own tool like I did, but be careful there.

One item of note, Mossberg changed the action bar slide assembly length on the 500 circa 1997 or so. Whatever forend you put on there will need to be the length that fits your particular gun.
