View Full Version : Maverick 88 as good as mossberg 500s

I have a chance to trade my bow for Maverick 88 syn stock with 18 1/2 barrel, slug barrel, and vented barrel for bird hunting. Are they as relable as the 500s series? Or should I trade the bow with 250 cash for a 590 with adj stock and ghost shights?

I think a standard 500 is fine. I don't feel the personal need for the extra rounds and didn't pay more for the 590. I've never heard a bad word about the 88 in comparison to the 500. I like the safety of the 500 better, but that is personal preference.

That's the only I do not like, is were the safety is. Pluses for the maverick trade is I do get three barrels for different needs, and it is a even trade, no cash is involved.

Jump on it... The 88 is a well built gun. The 3 barrels are worth 200+ bucks by them self. If you ever score a 500 you got plenty of barrels... My son owns the 88 while I have a 500 and have gotten to inspect and compare the 2.

Maverick 88s are excellent working guns. Fit and finish generally isn't quite as good as a 500 or 870 express, but reliability isn't going to be an issue as long as nothing's broken.

I happened to pick up an 88 Maverick in a trade myself a month or so ago, unfired. I have given it a workout and it seems to be a fine shotgun.18 1/2 in. bbl. with a five round tube. In truth,it would probably do me fine as my only fighting shotgun.Likewise,I havn't heard any negatives about the Maverick.

I'm up to ~650 rounds through my 20" 8 shot maverick 88 w/o a single problem. For ~$200 otd I can't complain.

I recently sold my 1991 Maverick 88 with THOUSANDS of rounds through it ranging from 2-1/2" Aguila Mini-Shot to 3" magnum slugs without a hitch

What a GREAT value for the price, and the fact that it accepts most -500 accessories.

IIRC the newer -88s have dual action bars just like the M'berg 500s

don't hesitate to jump on the offer

So far the 88 is a good gun. Is the 590 worth near 500 bucks with ghost ring sights and adj stock/pistol grip? With all you saying jump on the 88 the less the 590 sounds like a deal.

My 500 20ga with 18.5 inch barrel suits me just fine for HD or hunting...
I see no need for any more.

I'd rather have the Mav 88 with the extra barrels then install a Knoxx recoil-reducing Compstock or Spec-Ops stock for around $120 extra. http://knoxxrecoilsolutions.com/index2.html
Don't need the ghost-ring sights for small game hunting or home defense ..and Rifled slug barrels usually come with their own rifle type sights(some even have an attached scope rail).

PS:Also if you intend on using a Pistol Grip-Stock the cross-bolt Safety on the 88 is actually in the better location..as the 500's top tang safety would be pretty hard to reach ;)

I took the trade for the 88 even with my bow. not as perrty as 500s but it holds up as good then who cares.

Heres a place that sells the knoxx recoil stocks cheaper if interested..
btw congrats on the new gun.

maverick is nice working gun. I also bought the 590 with cash. I always wanted one. so I have both and maverick is very impressive for the trade I made. 590 is not too bad, but thinking of going back to reg stock instead of the adj stock with pistol grip. I liked the reg stock in the way it tucks in my body.

:D Yes, the stock tucked under the arm is a good fit for HD. Especially when knowing the location of all the BG's is impossible at worst and just a guess at best...
