I'm fairly knowledgable on handguns and do ok with rifles, but I new to shotguns. I was looking into buying one for HD and was checking out mossberg . I saw this type of 500 and didnt know what the hell is on the end of the barrel. I'm assuming its a flash suppresor, but I just wanted to double check. Thanks in advance for answering my dumb question. If anyone has other good HD shotgun suggetions please throw them out.

Mossberg describes that part as a "barrel stabilizer". From its looks, it appears to be a muzzle-brake, similar to what comes on a Springfield-Armory M1A Scout or SOCOM.
The muzzle-brake will add weight to the end of the barrel and also directs gases upward, impeding muzzle-rise by producing downward force, when fired. To what extent this "barrel stabilizer" would affect flash is unknown to me.

The most useless thing on Earth is a shotgun with no stock. Mossberg 500's are good shotguns, but don't waste your money on a pistol grip only shotgun. You have little or no control.

I wasnt planing on getting this model. I just ran across it in my quest of finding what I wanted and saw this on the mossberg website.
But I will admit it does have its uses. Just not a use of mine
