some here were actually cheaper than an 870, i was wondering if the 1300 compares to the 870, in terms of reliability and ease of use, cleaning, ect.

The Winchester will give you good service, no doubt. However, the 870 has a better reputation. The Winchester is no longer being made. For reliabity, parts availability, and value, the 870 is the better buy.

go 870, it is the standard of pump action shotguns.

I would agree with the others concerning the 870. It has been around in different variations for many years and has a proven track record. I have nothing against Winchesters. In fact I have several Winchester shotguns and love them. The Remington 870 is just hard to beat when it comes to reliability and dependabilty.

Win 1300 parts are still available. I've owned different variations on the 1300, and still own an Uplander and a Defender. I think they are are good utilitarian shotguns, and have never had any problems with them.

I inherited a Winchester 1200 Police model made in 1980 and I love it. It is still in great shape and I am pretty sure it was used frequently before I rec'd it. I've put roughly 500 rounds through with no problems.

I don't know too much about the 870 though, my other shotguns are Mossbergs

I thought FN was still producing variants of the Defender. I got a Defender for $239 a few years back and it's been fine and problem free.

I own both. I don't argue that the 870 has better parts availability, but as far as reliability, cleaning, etc. I rate them about equal. Each has a little edge in some areas. My 1300 is faster to operate the pump. It has a very different lock-up than the 870. the 1300 uses a rotating bolt lock-up and is very reliable & fast. The 870 also has a strong Lock-up but is the standard straight in and latch type. The 870 has steel receiver, and I like that over the alloy receiver of the 1300, of course the 1300 is lighter.

The overall bottom line for me is that they are about equal....execpt for parts availability, the 870 is better in that area.

I like the safety position on the 1300 better than on the 870. I also like it with the Knoxx stocks, especially with the pistol grip styles. Your finger naturally goes to the safety when resting outside the trigger guard (assuming right handed functioning). It's kind of a toss-up as far as the three major brands go. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses.

I have one......... it works. It's a little different, what with the rotating bolt lockup...... compared to my 870 or my mossberg......
