Can anyone recommend a decent semi-auto shotgun?? Looking to spend under $300. Mainly for home defense so would like a short barrel too.

You can't get much for under $300. Most single shot H&Rs I've seen cost just under that or less. There is the Saiga, like an AK-47 in 12ga or 20ga, but I think they are around $500+.

If you want something used, I think you can find a Remington 1100 or something for around 300, not saying how used though.

go with a used semi-auto if that's what you really want - or better yet a basic pump gun ( Benelli Nova, Browning BPS, Remington 870, etc ).

Check used and in pawn shops. We have a local pawn shop that has some good deals. I have picked up a 1100 and a 870 around $300 (one +, one -) in the past couple of months. Seem to be more folks hocking!

Here is a barely used Browning BPS 12 Field over on the Texas Hunting Forum http://www.texashuntingforum.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/370308/an/0/page/1#Post370308 for $375. In Texas but you might be able to use a FFL if you are not in the Lone Star State.

Your best bet is to find a decent used 1100 and get an extra barrel for it. They are going around $375 for good examples around here. Smooth, soft shooting, and with a slug barrel surprising at the 75 yard mark.
