View Full Version : What to use to paint my shotgun?
February 13, 2008, 01:21 PM
I am thinking about taking my mossberg 500 and painting the barrel, magazine tube, reciever a olive green color.
I am hoping an additional finish will keep the wear and tear from showing so much.
Also it will help with breaking up the outline when hunting.
What type of paint should I use? Will krylon spray paint work well?
I am too lazy to do anything other than some type of spray paint.
What type will work the best?

Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II or Duracoat (both epoxy based). Or you could use Brownell's teflon/moly finish(sold in a spray can), but you would need an oven big enough to cook it in. I think Krylon makes a epoxy based paint like duracoat. I think it's call fusion, but don't quote me on that. I have no expirence with just using spray paint, but I have used the others I mentioned and I am impressed with how well they hold up.

Painting a gun with a "rattle can" is probably the worst thing you could do / at least in my opinion. It won't have the same harness or durability of the factory finishes - especially where you get a lot of heat or any areas where you get some wear it'll scratch pretty easily.
But its your gun - if you want to paint it, paint it. Follow the same procedures you would use in painting anything metal - clean, degrease, prime and paint. For "rattle cans" Krylon is a good national brand - it'll probably work as well as anything.

I think I will paint it and post some pictures next weekend.
How come there are very few pictures on this site?
I usually go to ar15.com and their forum has pictures everywhere.

Maybe they can afford cameras on that site. Pictures cost money; talk is cheap. We prefer spending our money on more guns and then yakking about them later. ;)
