]You mentioned fun: fed law allows you to purchase a short-barreled shotgun (barrel less than 18") for a $5 tax to the US Treasury. This would be classified as an AOW (any other weapon) and is regulated like machine guns and other NFA (National Firearms Act of 1934) weapons. I've seen Mossberg 500s w/10, 12, or 14" barrels listed for $450. Most of the Ithaca Stake-Outs, Win pumps and Rem 870s have been more expensive. [/I]

That's what I want for home defense, a double bbl 20 gauge about 10 inches long. I can legally buy such a thing? I am in Minnesota.

You can legally buy it, but will have trouble finding one. A few class 3 manufacturers have done small runs, but they are hard to find, used.
It may be cheaper to build your own, but the tax for an individual making one is $200.

I always did have a soft spot for the old Ithaca Autoburgalar. I also like that shotgun in 3:10 to Yuma, it looks to me like a 10ga with about 14" barrels.
