I'm looking into getting a secondary ccw weapon, really considering getting a 3 inch 1911. Could a pistol of that size be carried comfortably in an ankle holster? I am 6'4", 220 lbs.

I attempted for about 3 days to carry a Glock 27 in an ankle rig and it is considerably lighter than the 1911. It was Very uncomfortable and felt like a ball and chain! If you needed to walk fast or run.... Faggettaboutit! I carry a Tomcat in .32 or a Ti revolver on the ankle but anything else is a BRICK!
IMHO

An ankle holster never really makes much sense.

Being able to run and/or dodge is a major self-defense consideration. Anything larger than an alloy J frame in an ankle holster makes quick movement impossible, and even the J frame can be clumsy.

An ankle holster is a good way to carry a gun that you don't need to reach.
Why not just put a small gun in your pocket?

And a 3" 1911 is small enough to pocket carry - in the right pocket. I do it every day.

You might be on the small side to carry it off, but maybe if you wore gangsta baggies it might work. Kidding aside I tend to agree with Golddog, it's going to hinder movement. How about one of the Kahr PM series?
