View Full Version : Very Old 10/22 Rear Sight

August 23, 2007, 09:52 AM
An "old timer" from my VFW post brought me his very old, very nice Ruger 10/22. He says, " I bought this'n here when they's first come out".

He asks me if I can help him with the rear sight ( we do a bit of squirrel hunting together).

He managed to break the head off of one of the rear sight adjustment screws. Parkinsons has set in on this old buddy of mine and looks like in trying to adjust his sights , he scratched the crap out of the sight and boogered up the screw heads.

So, I'm thinking just replace the rear sight.
Any ideas?

Sadly, money is very tight for this old war hero. He recieved a Bronze Star and Purple Heart during D-day on Guam.

Is the problem with the rear or front sight?

If there is no rust or tension on the screw, you might get luck and be able to back out the screw using a very fine pick.

Is it the folding leaf type sight that's busted up?

I'd be willing to bet there are several people around who have one or more of those sitting unused in a parts box. They aren't terribly expensive. If you check the Brownell's schematic here (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/schematics/schemmfg.aspx?schemid=56&m=13&mn=Ruger%c2%ae&model=Model+10%2f22+R%2c+RB+) it's part number 55 and cost is $11.15.

You can replace the whole rear sight pretty easily. Using a piece of 1/4" brass rod, drive the sight out of the dovetail (hit the brass rod rear with a light hammer, pushing the base of the sight with the tip of the brass rod) and drive the new one in the same way. Brownells has the sights, as does Ruger.

Maybe treat the guy and buy him a BSA red-dot sight and a base to go with his 10-22. Dot-sights are easy on aging eyes.

I may have some of those sights out in the shop. I have 8 Ruger 10-22's, and remove all of the sights from the factory barrels.
I'm down in Grayling, MI. If you PM me you address, I'll send you a rear sight set.
