I have a particular build in mind. It requires me to cut the barrel however. i asked this question in the general forum, but i'm not entirely sure where the guy was talking about. what i want to do, is pull all the front stuff, flip the front site, and butt it up against the end of the gas tube. have a little sticking out, and put a custom rick's break on it. probably about 4 inches worth of break. so would my barrel length meet or exceed 16.5"?

The length of the barrel up until the gas tube is just about 12 inches, so you probrobly need an extra 2 inches to be sure to permenently fasten the muzzlebreak too, so you get up to 16 1/2 inches distance on the barrel. You'll also have to adjust and play with the gas valve as when that barrel is that short it plays up the gas system.

Why not just get a short Saiga?

i have a 16" saiga. you'll get what i'm doing when i'm done.

just to reiterate... a muzzle device does count towards barrel length correct?

I thought that it did count and that is why a lot of manufactures are putting them on permanently. I could be wrong, but the ATF site would say for sure.
