Hey guys, was looking into a AR-15 for myself and have noticed there are ALOT of different style, types, looks, and everything else for this weapon. Truly I'm at a loss and was wondering if you could point me in a direction for information. This will be my first rifle, so I want to get it right. This forum has been a great help, but wondered if there was any books/websites etc that you would recommend. Thanks in advance.

What are you planning on doing with it; plink? 3gun? XTC? SR comp?

People here are real knowledgable, helpful and friendly:

Some good information here:

And TFL isn't so bad either.

As Scott pointed out, once we know what you plan on using the rifle for, we can offer more advice. For instance a longer, 20" or 24" bbl makes a great bench rifle and would be better for shooting little varmits at long ranges. A 16" bbl makes a great plinker, home defense, and hunting rifle.

AR15.com is probably the best site for knowledge... just so many people. It's hard to beat.

For info from professional type shooters, look at www.M4Carbine.net and www.10-8forums.com

Couple things to think about when buying an AR:

1. Intended purpose (plinking, home/personal defense, 3-Gun, etc)
2. Accuracy level your interested in from the AR
3. Price Range

Most folks want an AR that will do a little of everything (Varmint hunting, plinking, defense). Generally in this case, a quality 16" SS barrel with a mid-length gas system is the best choice as it will give you accuracy and reliability.

Wikipedia has a rather large collection on the AR and its MANY offspring. Easy to read IMO. If forum threads arent your favorite learning style that is.........:p
