Just bought a New Stag Arms 5L 6.8 MM. It has the folding stock, carry handle with rear sight and of course it is left handed. I know very little about the AR type rifles and was wondering if there are any particulars that I need to know about right off the bat. I have already obtained two extra magazines and 3 boxes of shells. Factory ammo is high. I reload for my bolt guns and pistols but was wondering how particular the AR's are about reloads? What would be a good scope system to put on it? It will be used for occassional target practice and on occassion a varmit blaster, but mainly will be a defense rifle for SHTF, if it ever happens. Any input from you guys would be appreciated.

With a 6.8 reload for sure. Get some good bullets, get some cheap bullets and reload. Full length size, watch the OAL and you should be fine. I disassemble and clean mine after each session but I don't think it's entirely necessary but it is so easy to strip.

Semi-auto rifles require a specific gas pressure range to operate the action reliably. Full length resize and use a medium burning rate powder and it should give you great service. I haven't looked at 6.8 SPC dies, but if anyone makes small base dies I would use them too.

I have two Stag lefties both in 5.56 originally (one is about to be topped with a custom barreled upper in 204 Ruger) and am very happy with both. I do know mine had to have a aftermarket triggers installed to achive any sign of serious accuracy. I went with a Chip McCormmick single stage match trigger in one and the Geissele Highspeed DMR two stage trigger in the other. I will be adding free floated hand guards on both next. Other than the factory triggers being real real heavy with too much creep mine have been flawless in function. I went with the LaRue Tacticle scope mount on the carbine below.
If you have any questions about the two triggers or the optics mount I used feel free to email or PM me

ACOG scopes are a good choice . Otherwise make sure ring height is correct or it will affect shooting position. Leupold (mk4) makes a ring esp. for the AR. Badger is also excellent. Nightforce has a one piece mount I believe. If you find a Vihta powder you like it will save alot of cleaning time . The difference is dramatic.
