View Full Version : Beretta 303, Remington 1100, or Browning BPS?

I'm going to visit my parents this weekend to help my father with some home improvement projects. He's got quite a few shotguns laying around from his skeet/trap days that I've had my eye on.

I used to shoot the 1100 in 20 guage with great success at dove hunting, but I think I want a 12. He has one in 20, and two in 12(one is a trap model I believe). The Beretta is also in 12 and was my mother's destroyer of clay. It is a beautiful gun, but needs the charging handle that broke off long ago. The BPS pump was my father's favorite bird gun, and my first 12 guage experience. All of these shotties are in immaculate condition, so I won't be altering them in any way.

Which would you recommend that I try to "pilfer" via sweet talking? I basically want a shotgun to get into skeet shooting(I've never shot skeet before), and possibly act double duty as a hd shotgun? Is a replaceable choke something I should use as a determining factor? Sorry, but I'm a complete blank slate when it comes to shotguns.

Thank you.

And I don't think I can sweet talk my way into one of the old Citori's. :(

I'd "grovel" for the Remington 1100.. The Berreta 303 is a great gun, but no longer made. Finding parts might not be a big problem and some may interchange with a 390,, maybe. Good luck with the situation..

Second on the 1100, but as said, the 303 is a wonderful gun. Should be able to get a charging handle at E-gunparts.com, AKA Numrich gun parts.

Can't speak to the other two, but the Browning BPS is a fine shotgun. I love mine. Kind of depends on whether you want to go pump or auto, I suppose.

I think I'm going to press for the Browning first, and then be "extra sweet" and take my sister's old 1100 that she forgot all about. Thanks for all the tips guys.

Do you know what type/model of BPS it is? Just curious.

Leif, from what it says on the barrel..."Invector 2 3/4" & 3" Field Model -28"."

Oh, and the Beretta is a 1200.

I love my BPS 20ga. I tried one in a 12 ga, and it was clunky and heavy. The 1100 really sounds like your best bet. But which one fits you best?

Hedley, that sounds like the standard Hunter 28" barrel model, which is what I have. Again, great gun. It is a little heavy, but robust as all get out. Invector refers to the chokes that Browning uses.

I also forgot about a Winchester 1200 pump in 12. I can't find much info about it, but it has a "pump release" button on the right side of the trigger guard and a checkered barrel.

My dad told me I could pluck one from his inventory once I get serious about skeet. So I came home empty handed and am now trying to locate a skeet club here in Austin.

So my choices are:
1100 Skeet model 12
1100 20
Beretta 1200 12 with modified choke
Browning BPS 12
Winchester 1200 12

They all fit me fine(6'2"/200lb), even though the Beretta's stock is cut down for my mom. I think I'm going to go with the 1100 when I get serious about clays.
