The most recent NYPD shooting, you know, the one with a total of 50 rounds fired and the soon-to-be-bridegroom killed, has brought out some STRANGE comments like this:
"Police rules mandate that an officer pause after firing three rounds to assess the situation. If the shooters had followed procedures, they might have seen there was no threat before it was too late." - NY Times Editorial 11/28/06
It's possible that what this writer AND OTHERS are referring to are some specific DRILLS practiced on the firing range, but, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, NO SUCH RULE OR PROCEDURE EXISTS that apply to ACTUAL deadly force incidents ANYWHERE in American law enforcement.
Unfortunately, the media are now QUOTING THEMSELVES so often that the general public might confuse what they says as FACT!
