Anybody been checking this new show out? It's got some big names on there, Mas Ayoob, Clint Smith, The Gunsite crew. Seems like a decent show where you might actually learn something.

By the way, I noticed Mr. Smith using what looks like a Springfield XD in the last couple of episodes. Wonder if he's given up the 1911?

Nah. Clint has not given up on the 1911. He also shoots Glocks, DA revolvers, SA revolvers, etc.

We asked him to shoot the XD because . . . .well, because Springfield is a sponsor of the show! <grin>

He uses a Glock (not a sponsor) for some segments. Since S&W is also a sponsor, expect to see the M&P show up now and then.

Last week I spent five days at Gunsite shooting the M&P 9mm and the M&P15 (AR15). Lots of fun. A very nice pistol.

I created the concept for Personal Defense TV out of the calls I get on the radio show ("Tom Gresham's Gun Talk"). People want to know about personal defense. We produced it very quickly last year. It's running now on The Outdoor Channel.

We will be meeting soon to discuss plans for next year's video taping.

Suggestions are welcome!

Wow! After almost two years, we find Tom's still alive & kickin'! But, um.... it is, after all, almost Halloween. You sure you aren't Tom's zombie? ;) :D .

Seriously, welcome back, Tom! :) I've got a sneakin' suspicion that your show is going to draw a lot of attention here. It most certainly drew mine!

Two years?

Heck, it seems like only yesterday. <grin>

Been a bit busy, but it's all been good. The "Gun Talk" radio show is now carried on both Sirius and XM satellite radio systems. (Ch 166 on XM).

Started an aviation TV series, working on a hunting series, and created the Personal Defense TV series.

Traveling a lot, but having fun. Got home last night after a 4200-nautical mile trip in the Bonanza. Visited the shooting range for the NYPD, spent a week at Gunsite, and otherwise had fun and worked a lot of long days.

Putting together a "Gun Talk" shoot at Gunsite for next year.

I've also pretty much cut my internet forum activities to moderated forums (fora?) such as TFL.

Shoot I didn't even get the name righht!!! But kudos to Mr. Gresham and all involved!

What I like about the show is the fact that they actually teach us something, not just skim over the techniques.

Thanks again for an informative show!

Ah, yes... this is why I pay for the nice cable with a DVR. I must arise from my computer and set my TV contraption to record these shows.

I don't know how this new deal slipped past my razor-sharp senses. It must be because I always fast-forward through commercials.

The plan is to release the shows on DVD.

Right now, we are still editing the shows.

We were able to gather a real "A Team" of instructors for the show. Each week we have segments with Massad Ayoob and Clint Smith. For the season running now, we went to Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, Valhalla, and the S&W Academy.

We used several instructors at Gunsite, and there's no doubt that these are world-class coaches. These guys and gals are great.

although i enjoy the show,i would get more out of the demonstrations if the bad guy was a real bad guy rather than a paper target.
ie: when masaad used the bad guys elbow to turn him off center, the bad guy just didnt put up much of a struggle.
still a great show that i enjoy watching....thanks!

It would be nice to get those shows when/if they are released on DVD. I just found out about this show (and the Gun Talk radio show) from this thread. I've already downloaded all the Gun Talk podcasts and have been listening to them at work. Very entertaining and informative! I will be calling my local talk radio station www.997wtn.com and tell them that I along with a lot of people would love for a radio talk show about guns to be aired here. All of Middle TN can tune in that station so that would be a huge market of gun owners. I think right now they have a dental show and something else filling that timeslot ;)

Anyways, I am watching the current episode of PDTV right now on my DVR and have already set it to record future episodes. I am enjoying the show.

mmmm...valhalla...must go back.

Looks like I'm gonna have to get the outdoor channel turned back on (my CFO (wife) turned it and a bunch of other ones off to save cash). Course, I'd love to have something like this on DVD. Real good for those of us with short attention spans.

Now that's not fair Dino. The show has changed names after the second or third episode. The first ones I recorded are called Self Defense TV, and then they say Personal Defense TV after that. At least that's how Direct TV had it.

So Tom, why the name change?

For all interested, if you have Direct TV or Dish Network, the Outdoor Network (OUT not OLN) is part of a sports package, but for $1.99 a month you can add it to your service. Believe me the show is worth .50 cents an episode. Plus you have shootingusa, american rifleman, and all sorts of what my wife calls "Whispering in Camo" shows.

Probably good that someone mention it though in case people have problems finding "Self-Defense TV" in their channel guide. ;)

From the time I was first contacted and throughout the development of the project it has always been "Personal Defense TV," to my knowledge... I understand that there was a screw up on some cable company listings for some reason.

Tom?

Guntalk
November 3, 2006, 11:49 PM
The show's name has never changed. My proposal for the show had it as "Personal Defense TV" back in December of last year.

That was the working title, and is the permanent title.

As Rob said, there was a glitch on the cable/satellite system program guide for a couple of weeks, but the show (when you watch it) was always PDTV.

We just put some photos from the S&W Invitational I attended last week on the new www.guntalk.com web site. Still filling in some of the hole on the site, but at least it's up.

And the archives/podcasts of the radio show are up, too.

PDTV - you guys are off to a great start. Keep the CCW stuff coming. And, please continue with the good product integration in the "lessons". The other gun shows have turned into little more than infomercials. I loved Ayoob's J-frame pocket carry tips. Good stuff - keep it coming!

I regularly watch, or have watched, most of the gun-centric shows on OLN and O'door Channel, and SDTV is the most useful to me. The others have their merits, but endless product reviews, pro match coverage, and (most especially) criminally insipid segments like those G&A "torture" tests, get a bit old. I do find Shooting Gallery generally informative, as well.

Man, I wish the show were an hour long! Reading on the internet and reading books is one thing, but watching techniques demonstrated by people is great to watch. I particularly like the Reality Check segment.. always some good info there.

No he hasn't given up the 1911. Its just that Springfield became a big sponsor of the show, and when they sent them a few XD's he liked them and thought they were one of the ideal self/home defense guns.

I myself own an XD and its a great pistol. Its an XD9 Service model. I have put about 5k rounds through mine and have only had 1 malfunction which was an FTE(failure to eject). All in all they are great pistiols and are becomeing more popular by the day!

I showed my wife the episode about the AR as a home defense weapon.

Ayoob gave 5 things to do say after a shooting.

He said do not just shut up and yell lawyer.

1) Tell the police "there is the man that attacked me"
2) Tell the police you will sign a complaint against your attacker.
3) Point out evidence.
4) Point out witnesses.
5) Tell the police you will fully cooperate in 24 hours after consulting with an attorney.

I recorded 2 episodes on my TVO and enjoyed both today. I have it set up to record all episodes. I am also recording American Rifleman and Guns and Ammo.

Great TV on the outdoor channel and I hear no anti-gun rhetoric.

This last season's worth of programs was top-notch except for the ammunition episode...

I know Hornady makes great ammo. I carry 200gr XTPs in my 1911 but was still a little put-off by the show...

How much free ammo and cash does Hornady give you guys to be the only ammunition maker ever mentioned? That ammunition show was nothing more than an infomercial for Hornady so it went well beyond the realm of regular product-placement...

It better be a lot or you guys are being taken.

ReefBlueCoupe
February 13, 2007, 10:19 PM
Well I somewhat agree with the gratutious use and mention of Hornday, but let's face it, the first season of a TV show is somewhat at the mercy of the advertisers, and this initial blatant advertising and the money that comes from it may be necessary to ensure a future for the show. After all, TV wouldn't exist without advertising. Same with radio.

I think once PDTV gets a larger fan base, and it's proven that a certain number of people watch it, they will have a little more say over what gets advertised and how.

At least, that's the way I see it. Anyone else care to comment?

Tom, give us some e-mail addresses and phone numbers of people we can contact to tell them how much we like the show.

Like all other current shows about firearms, it's not very good at all. -

A couple of guys on there talking about self defense tactics for 5 minutes and then product showcase, advertisement, advertisement, advertisement. a segment on a way to draw then repeat advertisements. Then about midway there is a selection on self defense procedures that most here on TFL already know and then advertisements, advertisements, advertisements.

It's just not worthy of a viewing to me.... there was one section where Massad Ayoob was talking about correct pocket holsters and the way to draw and I thought that was a good portion and also introduced me to Mr. Ayoob, whom I had never seen but just heard about, he's a good guy and very knowlegable.

The rest of them get on my nerves though somewhat, I don't feel that the current firearm related television shows represent what we as armed citizens are as a whole to the many misinformed people who wish to have armed citizenship a distant memory.

Call DIRECT TV back. The person you talked to is mis-informed. You can add any channel that is part of a package for $1.99 per month. The girl I talked to didn't know it either but she said she'd "research it". She came back and signed me up. $2 a month is nothing for this show, plus Shooting gallery, cowboy shooting, guns and ammo TV, lots of hunting shows.

My DVR is still harvesting episodes from time to time. It picked up the "rifles for home defense" episode last week.

See if your DVR is set to record "first run and repeats"... if it's not it will skip the reruns.
