View Full Version : 6.8 SPC Deer Rifle...

I have thought long and hard about this....

Untill last year, I have borrowed guns for gun season here in WI. Never really comfortable with what I was using. Last year I bought 870 Express Rifled gun. 20" or so bbl, throws slugs pretty good. I still managed to miss my buck... Not the guns fault, but mine.

I rarely take over a 75 yard shot, RARELY, but I would like the capability to be there.... I used to have a M4 in 5.56 that I had to sell for financial reasons. I loved the handling of this gun... I am considering a AR15 in 6.8 for deer hunting this year.

Seeing I do my part, how/what is a 6.8SPC comparable to, catridge wise?

My plans...

Stag Lower with RRA n/m Trigger....
6 Posistion stock (This will actually be usefull, as I may be piling on lots of clothes)

FlatTop Upper with BUIS of some sort. (#40 SP maybe?)

16" M4 Profile bbl to save some weight...

My problem most of the time is "Getting the deer in the scope" I think this has alot to do with wearing so many clothes, and the rifle being so long....

Hmm, optics, I had a EOTech on my last M4... That might fit the bill... Or maybe a low power optic? Any suggestions?

I'd also be interested in an AIMPOINT type optic or clone, I have heard of a 2MOA dot model, but can't seem to find any info on it. I do believe it is one of the aimpoint clones....

I am basically open to suggestions? Would it be worth putting a basic free float tube on the rifle? It is for deer hunting, so I won't need anything hanging of the rails.

And for a sling, a single point, or a 3 point? Any recomendations?

Am I crazy? Wait, don't answer that!

Anyone have one in this config? Or could give me a aproximate weight?

What kind of twist rate should I look for in a bbl?

I think the 6.8 SPC is close to the .270 ballistically.
J-Rod, There is a 6.8 SPC for sale here:

Close to a 270 win? Not with half the powder charge and short, low BC bullets. It's closer to the 7-30 Waters and 7mm BR, neither are very common in the woods tho. Anyway, looks to me like it would be fine to 250 yards before the velocity and energy drops off. The trajectory is nice at 250 too.

Zak Smith, noted gun nut and TFL member, has posted here about deer he took with a 6.8 in Colo.

Here's a thread in the general subject area:

I was thinking along the lines of both shooting the same weight bullet, that the .270 and 6.8SPC were similar. Here's a comparison from Remington's web-site.
