Maybe someone can tell me how to tell what the "weight" of a recoil spring is. I have several, I know that they are different strengths, but am unable to tell how much they are. Any suggestions?

The weight of a recoil spring is determined by several things. Wire diameter, length, temper and number of coils. I think a 16 lb. is standard in a 1911 Gov't model. They range from 7 lb. thru 26 lb. I have found the 18 1/2 lb. spring to work well with most loads.

OkieGentleman, Brownells sells a Recoil Spring Tester that will tell you exactly what you have but the thing is $56. That's the only way I know of. George

It's a good article on how to build a recoil spring tester at home.

Good Luck...
