What exactly are posters refering to when they mention they've had problems with the finish? Wear on the grip?

Curious to know what you find out. Seems that the "bluing" finish wears easily off the gun after a few hundred shots.

When I first bought my XD-9 I noticed the finish to be very, very, easy to scratch. I used it in a holster at the range a couple times and it wore through. I love the gun, I just didn't like the finish on it. I sent mine off to Tripp to have the slide hard chromed, had no problems after that. Like was said before some XD's seem to have problems other don't.

Wouldn't the lifetime warranty cover problems with the finish?
I believe getting the XD in SS would eliminate problems with the finish.

Do you mean getting the bi-tone XD model? http://www.springfield-armory.com/images/xd-pistol/XD9301Large.jpg
Nowhere on their website does it mention a stainless steel model.

Finish wear isn't covered in the warranty. They do tend to have a poor finish. Yes the stainless slide will take care of the problem. I have the blued (black) slide. I have a few little marks that are noticable if your lookin for them. But I've been very mindful of it since I put the little scratch on it. I think the finish on the gun it the only problem if you can call it that. I'm considering getting the XD9 service mod w/ Stainless slide

Tripp on this forum? Does he have a website? How much did it run for the chrome job?

I have put close to 2000 rounds through my XD9 service and it is my primary carry weapon. I have not had any finish problems. I use Blue Wonder Armadillo after each cleaning.

If you take care of the gun it won't happen. Seems like a random problem though when it shows up. Either that or someone left it in some damp place for a while.
Either way you could get it refinished and still come out ahead the Glock pricing so even with worst-case-scenario it's still a good buy. However I do think the problem is overstated on the Internet, kind of like a Glock KaBoom.

Tripp Research (www.trippresearch.com) did the Hard Chrome on the slide. It ran me about $75 plus shipping to get it done, took about 2 weeks to get it back to me. I'm very happy with it. Excellant finish for CC.

Thanks, I was thinking on a hard chrome or GunKote finish I haven't decided yet for my Springfield. Mine has a few scratches but nothing I can't live with and the finish hasn't worn off in my Fobus Holster yet(?)... maybe eventually who knows but all guns show wear eventually. It gives them character and I like that.

I've had my XD-9 subbie for about 3 months (seems longer than that) and my basic black finish is still fine. It's been in and out of my holster countless times (I'm practicing for concealed carry), and handled a lot. Yeah, it has a little bit of wear already, but I'm not out to keep it in perfect shape. It was made to go BOOM! :D I clean it after every trip to the range. It lives in its plastic case. I've even "tested" a lettering color by using crayon, and just removed it tonight w/ some Hoppes solvent and the bristle brush that came w/ the gun. No scratches, no worn finish, no problems.
I belong to the XDtalk forum, and I believe the "finish problem" you're talking about is rust. Check the poll out here http://www.hs2000talk.com/viewtopic.php?t=23678&sid=818b07c10882e232e90bbe35efd9741d You typically hear the negative about the XD's finish problems. There is a much larger number of owners that have had no problems. I believe that part of the rust issue is where you live (moisture, humidity, lots of rain, whatever) and how you take care of your firearm (cleaning, drying if it gets wet, oiling, etc.) and how it's stored (dry plastic case, foam padding, safe, etc.).... I've heard that the foam padding in cases could retain moisture, which won't help your gun avoid rust. I think the XDtalk forum might have other ideas about how to avoid the problem, too. Also, getting the SS slide won't prevent a rust problem. I am pretty sure SS can rust, too.
My fiancee's gun was Gun-Koted by Rich at Canyon Creek, so she doesn't have to worry about it. I'm not worried about mine rusting either. I'm confident w/ Springfield's quality. If it ever does rust, I'm sure it would be my fault (cleaning or storage problem), not the manufacturer's.
