I have narrowed it down to these two.

Which one and why?

The Sig; I'm not big on polymer .45s.

i say HK USP .45! why? cause i love more bullets! 8 rounds is nothing, i need around 12. Sig is good, you should include the GLOCK 21 (if your hands are big enough). but it doesnt really matter, cause no matter what you pick your going to have an awesome gun! thank the Lord its not another piece of CRAP 1911! ;) but personally i like HK pistols, so i am bias!

Since you are obviously looking for a DA/SA style handgun in 45acp., buy the SIG P220.

I had a P220ST that I carried for about a year and it never once caused me any problems. I originally purchased it to qualify for my Concealed Handgun License. I easily shot 250 out of a possible 250. The gun shot better that any gun I had shot up till I traded it for a new Wilson 1911 style gun I had been wanting for quite some time. I really like the decocking device for hammer down carry of a non-1911 style guns. Some folks do not like the DA/SA combination. I have heard it can be confusing in a stress situation. Obviously one of the largest state trooper organizations in the US does not see it that way. The Texas Departmant of Public Safety issues SIG's to all state troopers as their service side arm.
Buy the SIG......you wont be disappointed!!!

I love my HK USP .45 Tac. I've owned several .45's Glock, Ruger, CZ, and now an HK. From my experience the HK was the best .45 I've used, and they are very accurate. Granted you do pay some extra cash for the HK name, but it's worth it.

No question the P220. If it weren't for getting a SS in the SIG then the choice would be closer but in SS the P220 gets the edge. The difference in recoil could be noticeable for you.

I prefer the USP 45 for a number of reasons, but mainly I really like the double stack mags vs the single stack. The frame mounted lever is one of the best in terms of location and function and with many options; decocker, cocked and locked, hammer down safety off, and hammer down safety on.

P220, because it's next in these back and forth answers. :D

I guess the SS would have lower recoil due to the extra weight, but the USP has a recoil reduction system ;)

Just pick the one you like the most, I own a USP45 Tactical, a P220 and a P220ST, all three are awesome shooters.

I like the features of the HK USP more (cond. 1 and/or DA/SA) but shootability and comfort, the SIG 220 is a lot better for me.

Both are great, but the slight edge goes to the SIG 220. pistol for pistol.

I have both a SIG P220ST and a USP .45. My friend has a plain SIG P220 and I use it very often. I prefer the HK USP over the SIG, but feel variety is the spice of life. Recoil is managed well in all three and all three are very accurate. The two features that put the HK over for me are:
-4 to 5 round increased capacity (12 in the USP vs. 7 or 8 in the SIG).
-Ability to carry in cocked and locked mode, like a 1911.

Other than this, both guns are pretty darn close in size and grip sizes. Grip goes slightly to the HK for me because trigger reach is easier, but it's not bad on the SIG either.

SIG p220 for sure, or even better p226 in 9mm or .40 ;)

I'll recommend the USP45. I love mine. Shot a sig 220 once and liked it, but for me there is no comparison.

I personally don’t own a USP, however I have several friends that do. They love em’. For under $1000 you can’t go wrong. HK quality is second to none. I can’t comment on the Sig, I don’t know anyone with one. Although I do think the Sig has nicer lines than the HK.

Personally I’m a 1911 fan, but if your budget is under 1K then I would go with the HK. A custom built 1911 is easily $2000-$3000.
