I was considering purchasing a Benelli M4 as my second firearm sometime in the near future, but had a couple of questions about it.

1. Are these guns California legal? I was looking at the California gun laws, and it would seem that they are, so long as they do not have the collapsable stock on them. I would be very sad if they weren't legal to buy.

2. Are there better semi-automatic shotguns out there that are California legal?

I'm pretty sure it should be California legal, though, given that the assault weapon laws (link (http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/dwcl/12275.htm)) for California only say that semi-auto shotguns, to be illegal, have to have a folding or telescoping stock and a pistol grip.

Anway, yeah. Thanks.

I bought one right here in CA. Love it. Mine's not the pistol-grip one though. Works great. Shooting a semi-auto shotgun is a blast - literally.

Are the ones with the pistol grips CA-legal? They ought to be.

They are perfectly legal here, even with a pistol grip. You don't see them in shops because there is about a three to six month backlog from Benelli.

so if I were to purchase one from a gun store, it would take three to six months for it to get to me? ouch.

If the gun store has it in stock, you only need to wait ten days.

If the gun store has to order it from the factory or distributor, yes, you are looking at a long wait.

Your best bet is finding a used one.
