In the (great) movie Heat (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113277/) there is an interestin long gunfight in the middle of the film. What type of assault rifle is Al Pacino using there, among other things to shoot Tom Sizemore in the forehead?

Is it a .308 or a .223? Brand, make?

I believe that it was a FNC in 5.56 NATO (.223Rem). Could be wrong, though ...

You are right, it is an FNC.

At one time this same gun used in the movie was on display/for sale at The Firing Lane in Athens GA.

Apparently that fight was choreographed by Andyt MacNab of Bravo 2 Zero fame.

We used to play that video to Officer cadets to teach them how to break contact under fire. The tactics are pretty good, although there seems to be a mysterious lack of communication between the shooters.."I'm moving!" "Reloading!" "Stoppage!" all that good stuff..... :) :) :)

The FNC is still alive and Kickin'. Don't be surprised if it turns up in 6.8 x 43mm SPC. Okay we agree on Al's gun, What about Tom Sizemores? Looked like a Valmet version of the AK to me! ;)

It was a Galil.

Sizemore also used an FAL in the beginning, when they took out the armored car.

Not to go too far off-topic, but "Heat" is an almost scene-for-scene remake of an earlier made-for-TV or straight-to-video movie; anyone remember the name?

The TV movie was L.A. Takedown

I believe it was a 5.56 Galil.

The second link that dz provided gives answers to the trivia questions and I took a look. They do say Cheritto used a Galil, but do not list caliber. I thought this one was a little tougher than Hanna's rifle. I knew it was an FNC when I watched the movie. Yeah, I did use that slow motion gadget. Cheritto's was a harder call, because with wood stocks, I find it hard to tell the difference, since the Galil was based on the Valmet and all three are AK variants! Not so much so with the FNC, but it does have an AK pedigree! ;)

does anyone find it odd that a cop was carrying a FN. The odds of a LAPD carrying a FN are slim to none.
I thought it looked like a HK G3. But to be fair isnt the FN based on the HK?

No, the FNC is somewhat based on the AK.
