A model 70 270 I inherited came with a Burris 4X scope on it. I know nothing about scopes. The scope is only marked "Burris 4X" is it a decent scope?

Yes; very decent. It is not a Schmidt & Bender or a Karl Kaps - but a very decent scope never the less, and 4x is a very good general purpose magnification. My most recent Burris aquisition is a 4x compact.

Burris builds a very good product.
Warranty is fully transferable so you just send it back to the factory if it should ever, (though I doubt it will) need service.

Similar quality to Leupold without the price. They are great gear.

Burris Scopes are very good scopes!
I would/did buy Burris scopes. My reference is the fact that Burris was an enginere at Leopold before starting his own scope company.

If you are going to use a scope on a 270, buy a 3x9.
