View Full Version : Plugging Barrel

This could go in a couple of places, so I thought I'd try my luck here first. How do you plug a rifle or shotgun barrel so you can soak it overnight?

I would think overnight might be a bit too long. I am no expert so I really wouln't know.

Ok then. What would I use to plug it for however many minutes or hours I choose then?

They sell bore plugs. www.brownells.com
Everything from .22 cal to shotguns.
If you are wanting to soak the bore with bore cleaner, you can do that overnight. It will be fine. However, there are some new products on the market. My favorite is called "Wipeout". (Also sold at Brownells) It is a foam that you spray down the bore and let it set from 1 hr to overnight. It is incredible. No scubbing Just punch clean patches down till it is dry. I use KG degeaser behind that to remove all residue. If it is going to sit for a while put a light coat of oil in the bore. Then degease before you shoot it again. This is the only cleaner we use in the sniper rifles at my agency.
Good Luck

I just tried one of these, and the results are simply AMAZING (no, i don't own stock in the company). Have a Mauser that I had (literally) spent hours scrubbing with brushes, patches and a couple different solvents. Got it looking OK, but would still get more junk every time I cleaned. Got some of the foaming stuff...Stuck the nozzle in the breach, gave it a good squirt (CAUTION: make sure its TIGHT in the bore, it comes out quite forcefully!) let it sit for 10 minutes (muzzle slightly down)...blue stuff (indicates copper) dripping out of muzzle, another squirt, another 10 minutes...repeated a few times until no more blue stuff came out. wiped it witha clean patch...looked down the bore and it was the perverbialy "mirror bright". Good stuff!

Since shotgun barrels are smoothbore, I'd taper a dowel rod and call it quits.

Not all shotgun barrels are smooth bores.. J/K. Lazy D where do you find the plugs at on the site? I tried searching bore plugs, barrel plugs, bore plug. Nothing.

Edit: Just found them. Thanks for that link. I'll get some on order.

Brownells does have the rubber plugs -- it is just hard to find them. Go back to their website and enter the product codes in the search engine. 082-201-100 is the code for rifle and pistol bore plugs. 082-201-101 is the product code for shotgun plugs.
