I have been tossing around the idea of having a psuedo scout rifle "built" for me. I have been thinking about getting a cheap non collectible 8mm Mauser of some sort and putting a 308 barrel on it. I have been told that the action will work fine with 308. I also plan on having the barrel cut to 20" or so and having an NP3 finish on it. Of course topping it off will be a scout scope mount so I can still use stripper clips.

I know it would be cheaper to just buy a 308 but that would be easy. Any advice on where to start? I was thinking of a VZ-24 to start with. Or would a Yugo M-48 work? I have heard that they aren't large ring. Thanks.

And like I said, I know it would be cheaper to just buy a 308 rifle I think it would be satisfying to do something like this.

I think a good one for this would be using an Ishapore .308 SMLE as a base. They're good, accurate rifles. The bolt system is excellent and it comes with a removable 12 round box mag and stripper clip guide. With a shortened barrel, scout mount and cut down or new forend it would be pretty formidible, and not at all expensive.

I've thought about an Enfield but I have a thing for Mausers. Besides I think it would be a little satisfying to have one built the way I want it.
