What do you all think is the most common/popular rifle? I don't have any rifles in my gun collection and would like to have one. It wouldn't be for hunting probably, just for target shooting. I'd like something common that is widely recognized as a decent gun. I'm looking for something that is to rifles what the remington 870 wingmaster is to shotguns, or the smith and wesson is to revolvers. Thanks!

As far as popularity, the rifles that come to mind are either a Remington 700 or a Winchester model 70. Either rifle comes chambered for a vast array of cartridges and can be had new or used.

the ruger m-77 in .308win. rugers are well made, rugged, very accurate, and reasonably priced. don't don't forget the lifetime warrenty if you don't know how to work on guns.

I am not an accomplished rifle shooter but there is nothing quite as satisfying as a good bolt action.

Take a look at the CZ line, quality guns.

Buy a good .22 bolt gun. Lots of fun, cheap to shoot, and will help you determine what you really want. CZ's are good. Ruger makes a decent bolt for not too much. As prices go up, look at Sako, Kimber, etc.

.17 HMR is an alternative, too.

In a semi-auto, .22LR , .22 Mag, .17HMR, Ruger 10-22. The AR-15 or 1911 of semi-auto-rifles in small (cheaper) calibers, although the .17 is pricier to shoot.

I would also say a nice bolt-action. CZ's are terrific but I like the 700 Remington's as well. The 700's are everywhere and it is easy to find one in the caliber and price range you want, new or used.
If you are looking for the "870 equivalent", the 700 comes to mind first for me.
I saw over a dozen 700's at a very small gun show this weekend.

So, what kinda shooting do you plan on doing?
Are you just looking for a decent field/everything type rifle, the kind that hunts, target shoots and will work when the SHTF?

Let's see my choice for an everything rifle would probably have to be either the Rem. 700P LTR chambered in .308 with a Leupold 3.5-10x40mm Target scope for the bolt action choice, or the SA M1A scout rifle with a low power scope mounted just forward of the receiver and a slew of 20 round mags to compliment the rig. Oh, and a couple of 5 round mags for hunting(required in most states)!

Actually, CZ makes a nice little carbine chambered in 7.62x39mm that would make a way cool field carbine with a compact 3-9x or 2-7x scope. ;)

Whatever rifle you select, If you just want to engage in recreational shooting, plinking, ect, try to stick to one of the common military calibers, 5.56x45, 7.62x39 or 7.62 Nato, these are all great to shoot, and mostly cheaper then say, popular hunting cartriges, like .270 or 243, ect, great calibers, but get expensive in a hurry if you shoot much.
