View Full Version : Noise/decibel level between long and short barrel, .223/.308?

My 16" AR is really loud.

I want to cut the noise a bit, by lengthening the barrel if it helps much.

And I would prefer to just get a .308, but not if it is louder.

I was wondering it .308 and .223 are much difference in noise level?

And, will getting a longer barrel make significant difference to cut noise?

All things being equal, a longer barrel should have less pressure when the bellet leaves the muzzle, so I would THINK that they would be less noisy. Another benefit of a longer barrel (but only from the perspective of the shooter) is that the origin of the blast (namely the muzzle) is located farther from your ear. That being said, I don't know if these "improvements" are going to be noticable or not.

There is a noise meter at the local electronics store that had been calling my name for some time, but I just haven't gotten in to buy it!
